Stay on free Resolve while it handles your footage and delivery requirements. Buy Studio when a specific limit repeatedly costs you time: native transcription, Magic Mask, noise reduction, a required delivery format, or scripting access in 21.1. "I want AI" is less useful than "I need to transcribe these interviews every week."

Studio costs $295 for a perpetual licence, with updates currently supplied without an additional upgrade charge ([Blackmagic Design](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio)). This comparison covers Resolve 21.1. Feature tables use Blackmagic's documentation; codec performance depends on the operating system, hardware and source format, so test your own files before buying for smoother playback.

The rest of the post is the detail behind each row, starting with the AI features, because that is where the gap has widened most over the last two releases.

![Blackmagic's Studio page: the free edition edits and finishes up to 60 fps at Ultra HD and includes collaboration and HDR tools; Studio adds the Neural Engine, 120 fps at 32K, multi-GPU 10-bit playback, hardware H.264 and H.265 decoding, Dolby Vision and HDR10+, and 45 extra Resolve FX for $295.](https://cdn.moda.app/voyager/blog/davinci-resolve-free-vs-studio/fig-studio-page-76dde40ba2.webp)

Blackmagic's own framing of the split. Everything in this post is a specific case of these two paragraphs.

## The AI features: what each does, who needs it, the free workaround

Blackmagic's Studio page says the DaVinci Neural Engine powers "many of the features found exclusively in DaVinci Resolve Studio" ([Blackmagic Design](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio)). The precise list is in the Resolve 21 Reference Manual, which labels each gated feature "(Studio Version Only)" in its section heading ([reference manual PDF](https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/UserManuals/DaVinci_Resolve_21_Reference_Manual.pdf)). The table is built from those headings, plus Speed Warp, which the Studio page lists as a Studio feature. The workaround column is what the free edition does natively, or a third-party tool that states it runs without Studio; those tools are evaluated in [AI plugins for DaVinci Resolve](/blog/ai-plugins-for-davinci-resolve), so they are named here without repeating that.

Two things stand out. Transcription is the feature that unlocks the most others: text-based editing, IntelliScript, subtitle generation, Detect Speakers and the dialogue search in IntelliSearch all sit on top of it. If your work is talking heads, that one dependency is most of the case for Studio. And the workarounds fall into three kinds: by hand (windows, keyframes, markers), in another app with the result imported, or a third-party tool that runs on the free edition. All are real options. None keeps the result live in the timeline the way the native tool does, which is the distinction [what "editable" means for AI video](/blog/what-editable-means-for-ai-video) draws: a Studio mask is a node you can adjust next week, an imported matte is a file.

![A page of the DaVinci Resolve 21 Reference Manual with the heading Magic Mask v2 (Studio Version Only), explaining that the tool uses the DaVinci AI Neural Engine to isolate people and objects from user clicks.](https://cdn.moda.app/voyager/blog/davinci-resolve-free-vs-studio/fig-manual-magic-mask-a0791e2603.webp)

The manual marks every gated feature in its section heading. Search the PDF for 'Studio Version Only' and you have Blackmagic's own list.

### The 21.1 scripting change

Until 21.0 the free edition could run Python scripts against Resolve's API from the Workspace > Scripts menu, which is how several free-edition AI panels worked. Resolve 21.1 moved that to Studio. Blackmagic's summary of the Studio 21.1 update lists "integration with AI assistants and 20 new scripting APIs with built-in console support" under Studio, not under the free download ([Blackmagic support](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion)). The release notes, as quoted by CineD and Puget Systems, give the reason: the Python API "was being used to hack studio features into the free version" and Resolve "relies on studio license sales to pay for the engineering team" ([CineD](https://www.cined.com/davinci-resolve-21-1-released-ai-assistant-integration-via-mcp-individual-hdr-trims-and-python-scripting-moves-to-studio/), [Puget Systems](https://www.pugetsystems.com/blog/2026/09/10/how-davinci-resolve-free-v21-1-scripting-changes-affect-puget-bench/)). The manual's preferences chapter already marked "External Scripting Using" as Resolve Studio only, with the free edition limited to the built-in Console, and marks Workflow Integrations, codec plugins and the OFX renderer plugin as Studio only ([reference manual](https://documents.blackmagicdesign.com/UserManuals/DaVinci_Resolve_21_Reference_Manual.pdf)).

In practice: the MCP server that lets an AI assistant drive Resolve is Studio only, and any free-edition panel that depended on the Python API needs re-testing on 21.1 before you rely on it. Lua tools may behave differently from Python ones. If a scripted panel is central to your free-edition work, stay on 21.0 until its vendor confirms 21.1 support, or budget for Studio.

![Blackmagic Design's 8 September 2026 press release announcing DaVinci Resolve 21.1, with AI assistant integration for Claude, Claude Code and ChatGPT Codex, available free of charge.](https://cdn.moda.app/voyager/blog/davinci-resolve-free-vs-studio/fig-press-211-76aea60296.webp)

The press release announces the AI assistant integration and says 21.1 is free to download. The support page is where it becomes clear the integration is a Studio feature.

## The non-AI differences

These limits predate the Neural Engine and still decide the purchase for many editors. Quoted phrases are from the [Studio page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio), the [Resolve product page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve) and Blackmagic's [support site](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion); the remaining rows are the manual's "(Studio Version Only)" section headings.

Three rows need a sentence more.

**Codecs.** Blackmagic describes the free edition in terms of 8-bit formats and Studio in terms of 10-bit playback and hardware decoding. It does not publish a per-edition list of which H.264 and H.265 flavours the free edition decodes, and most confident statements about 10-bit 4:2:2 files come from user testing, not Blackmagic. The practical check is to install the free edition and put a clip from your own camera on a timeline before you buy. RAW is not the issue people expect: the manual attaches no Studio marker to any camera RAW format, and the resolution cap applies to what you finish, not what you import.

**Resolution.** The cap is on the timeline and the deliverable, "edit and finish" in Blackmagic's words. A 6K Blackmagic RAW clip in a UHD timeline is fine on the free edition. The 6K deliverable, or the 100 fps timeline, needs Studio.

**HDR.** Blackmagic's pages are slightly inconsistent. The free product page says the free edition includes "HDR grading", and the Studio page lists "HDR tools" among free features, while the manual's HDR chapter opens by saying HDR features "are only available in DaVinci Resolve Studio". The specific sections resolve it: colour management into an HDR working space is available to everyone, and the delivery tooling (Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR Vivid, trim passes, HDR scopes, HDMI metadata) is Studio. If a client will check your master with a Dolby Vision analyser, you need Studio.

## Licensing and purchase mechanics

Studio is $295 as a one-time purchase ([Blackmagic Design](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio)). Every Resolve update, 21.1 included, is "available now for download free of charge", for Studio licence holders as much as free users ([press release, 8 September 2026](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20260908-03)). The $295 activation-key purchase is perpetual; Blackmagic also offers Cloud licence rentals. Free historical updates do not constitute a promise about all future pricing.

There are three kinds of Studio licence. Blackmagic's support notes for each Studio release say the build "requires a DaVinci Resolve Studio license dongle, Blackmagic Cloud license or software activation code" ([Blackmagic support](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/family/davinci-resolve-and-fusion)). A Blackmagic Design staff member set out the rules on the company's forum in October 2025: the activation key is "a personal license that allows concurrent use on 2 of your devices", which can be a work machine and a home machine regardless of who owns them; a dongle runs one machine at a time; Blackmagic Cloud licences are rentals ([Blackmagic forum, staff reply](https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21\&t=228581)). The same reply carries two warnings: neither dongles nor activation keys are tracked in Blackmagic's systems, so "treat the licenses like cash" and keep a copy of the code; and the App Store versions of Resolve are tied to an Apple ID and unrelated to licences bought from Blackmagic or its resellers.

You may already own a licence. Blackmagic's products page marks the URSA Cine, URSA Mini Pro, PYXIS and Pocket Cinema Camera lines "Includes DaVinci Resolve Studio", and so are the Speed Editor, Editor Keyboard, Mini Panel and Advanced Panel ([Blackmagic products](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products)). The Speed Editor is $435 with a Studio code in the box, so if you were going to buy a licence and want a search dial, the panel costs $140 on top. The Micro Color Panel and Replay Editor carry no such badge. Blackmagic Cloud organisations can also hold and assign Studio licence keys to members, per the manual's Blackmagic Cloud chapter, which is the route for a facility that needs reassignable seats.

One practical detail: Studio is a separate download and a separate application, not an unlock inside the free one. The staff reply spells it out: you need "the DaVinci Studio app installed (not the free DaVinci Resolve app)" and a valid licence. Both editions use the same project libraries, so nothing is rebuilt when you switch.

![Blackmagic's support page listing the DaVinci Resolve 21.1 Update and the DaVinci Resolve Studio 21.1 Update side by side; the free entry notes that support is only via the community forums, the Studio entry lists MultiMaster trims, AI assistant integration and 20 scripting APIs and requires a dongle, Cloud licence or activation code.](https://cdn.moda.app/voyager/blog/davinci-resolve-free-vs-studio/fig-support-downloads-5fbbb9e88a.webp)

Two downloads, two applications. The Studio note is also where Blackmagic lists the three licence types.

## Try your footage before buying

Use a short sample from the camera and codec you actually edit. On free Resolve, check import, playback, seeking, grading and a representative export. Try proxies before concluding that an upgrade is the only way to edit comfortably. Record the source codec, bit depth, chroma subsampling, resolution, frame rate and your operating system; "10-bit video" is not a complete compatibility description.

Then name the Studio-only operation you need. If it is transcription, compare the value of keeping that work inside Resolve with the cost of external transcription and SRT import. If it is noise reduction or a required delivery format, the native feature may settle the purchase immediately. Prefer a repeatable bottleneck over a list of features you might use.

## Who should stay on the free edition

* **Editors delivering SDR at 1080p or UHD, up to 60 fps.** The cap does not touch you, and the editing toolset is the one Studio users have.
* **Anyone who grades with windows and qualifiers and does not need noise reduction.** The node graph, colour management, LUTs and the base Resolve FX are all there. Resolve's grading reputation was built on tools the free edition includes.
* **Fusion and Fairlight users who do not need Atmos or deep compositing.** The pages are complete; the gated items are specialist.
* **People whose AI need is captioning.** AutoSubs and SRT import cover it, once you have tested the panel on 21.1.
* **Students and anyone evaluating.** Every project carries over the day you buy.

## Who should buy Studio

* **Editors who need native dialogue automation for interviews, documentaries or podcasts.** Transcription, text-based editing, Detect Speakers, Remove Silence and Voice Isolation are that job's daily tools, and every one is Studio only.
* **Colourists.** Magic Mask, IntelliTrack, temporal noise reduction, Film Look Creator, the beauty tools and Dolby Vision delivery. Over a year, $295 is less than one day rate.
* **Editors on 10-bit H.264 or H.265 camera footage.** Check support for the exact codec profile on your operating system and GPU. Studio can expand hardware decoding, but it cannot make unsupported hardware decode every format.
* **Anyone delivering above UHD, above 60 fps, in HDR formats, in stereoscopic 3D or to DCP and IMF.** These are hard gates.
* **Anyone who wants an AI assistant or a script to drive Resolve.** Since 21.1 there is no free route.
* **Anyone who wants Topaz Video's OpenFX plugin,** which requires Studio, as covered in [the plugin roundup](/blog/ai-plugins-for-davinci-resolve).

If you are on the fence, the tie-breaker is transcription: most editors touch it daily once they have it, it unlocks five other features, and it has no native workaround.

## Frequently asked questions

**Is DaVinci Resolve really free, and does it watermark exports?** Yes, and no. Blackmagic offers Resolve 21 as a free download and describes it as editing and finishing up to 60 fps at Ultra HD with grading, Fusion, Fairlight and collaboration included ([Blackmagic Design](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve)). Ordinary edits using free-edition features can be exported without a watermark. Studio-only effects are a separate case: do not leave a restricted effect applied and assume the same result. Resolution, frame-rate and feature limits still apply.

**Is Studio a subscription?** No. It is $295 once, and Blackmagic releases each update "free of charge" ([press release](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/media/release/20260908-03)). A licence bought for Resolve 18 runs 21.1. The recurring costs in the Resolve world are Blackmagic Cloud storage and rentals, and any third-party plugins.

**Can I use one Studio licence on two computers?** With an activation key, yes: Blackmagic staff describe it as a personal licence for "concurrent use on 2 of your devices" ([Blackmagic forum](https://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=21\&t=228581)). A dongle works on one machine at a time but moves between machines. Deactivate a machine before you sell it or leave a job, because Blackmagic does not track where keys are in use.

**Which AI features does the free edition have?** Very few. The manual marks Magic Mask, IntelliTrack, transcription, Voice Isolation, Super Scale, IntelliSearch, Speech Generator, Smart Reframe, Scene Cut Detection and the rest as Studio only. Dialogue Leveler carries no Studio marker, Optical Flow retiming without Speed Warp is available, and third-party tools such as AutoSubs and Colourlab AI state they run on the free edition. Since 21.1, the AI assistant integration and Python scripting are Studio only.

**Does the free edition limit resolution on import or on export?** On the timeline and the deliverable. Blackmagic's phrasing is "edit and finish up to 60 fps in resolutions as high as Ultra HD 3840 x 2160" ([Studio page](https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/studio)). Higher-resolution sources, including Blackmagic RAW from 6K and 12K cameras, are fine in a UHD timeline.

**If I buy Studio, do I have to redo anything?** No. Install the Studio application, enter the key, and open the same project library. Projects, grades, Fusion comps and Fairlight sessions are shared between the two editions; the features that were unavailable become available.
